Note on the cover: The picture shows the Nanpu Bridge which spans the Huangpu river from the old section of Shanghai (Puxi) to the Pudong (east bank) area. Built in 1991, it was initially the only bridge over the river. Now there are four bridges and three tunnels. Pudong was mainly farmland until 1991. Now it hosts a financial centre, free trade zone, hi-tech park, and the investments of many multinational enterprises. I think of the bridge as symbolizing the way MNEs form linkages between economies.
